Auroville
is located in the South of India. For more than 40 years
people are building here a new city, a new way of life.
Their far-away goal is to develop a society where men and
women of this planet will be able to enjoy life in harmony,
above the religion, above politics, above race and national
differencies.
Early in 2008 a part of our team has visited this phenomenon
and we decided to tell you about it and re-create its atmosphere
through a virtual tour. |

Auroville is a multi-national project. At present
time over 2000 people from all over the world are
inhabiting it. There are four official languages here:
Hindi, Tamil, English and French. Anyone can become
a citizen of Auroville if you pass a two year testing
period.
A huge amphitheatre is set in the heart of Auroville.
It has a stone cup with the soil from all over the
world in the middle. A little further you see a mighty
banyan tree - geographical center of the city. And
above it - a Golden Sphere of Matrimandir - The Sanctuary.

The main part of the sanctuary is the Inner Hall.
It is absolutely white. Sided with white marble, white
carpet covers the floor.
The Sunlight falls inside through the opening at the
top and reflected by a sophisticated system of mirrors
falls onto the crystal sphere in the middle. It in
turn brights the whole space with shining sparkles
of light.
Auroville has a territorial division by societies.
It is not based on nations or tongues, but rather
by interests. Thus there are architects, painters
and artists, farmers, etc..
This one is a "Samasti" part.

Translated from Sanscrit it means "group, kollective
labor". And we have to admit it reflects the
idea quite well. It is inhabited by individuals
from Italy, Brazil, Spain, Germany France, Holland,
India and USA who are apparently enjoying this life.

about the history of Auroville, tasks for today
and plans for the future.

/ community restaurant of the city.
